starter problems heelpp

Q.Ok so i had to replace the altenator in my honda prelude and after i did this the car ran great for a week but now whenever i turn it over it cranks but wont start. the battery was recharged since it died on me while driving and the altenator replaced. Now when i banged on the starter it did start, is it possibly anything else besides the starter im a lil broke, could the spark plugs been blown from the car dying while driving due to the altenator. what can i do to check and see if it is the starter or something else.
