Timing belt snaps and pistons bend?

Q.So I was driving down a grade on fourth gear riding the clutch I release the Clutha and my car makes a weird noise and turns off cars got no power steering so wheel gets hard. I get off the highway and pop my hood look around and see that my timing belt had snapped. Took my car to a mechanics and he says I bent my pistons I want to know if this is possible or if the mechanic is trying to rip me off for 900 bills to straiten them out need advise asap. Thanx.
