Can I replace the cam without having to remove the timing chain cover and slack off the chain tensioner?

Q.The exhaust camshaft on my 03 CRV has two lobes that are pitted at the lobe peak. Can I replace the cam without having to remove the timing chain cover and slack off the chain tensioner?

I already checked/done: Inspected cams with valve cover removed.

Answer You can remove the tensioner to release tension on the chain allowing you to change the cam, though honestly I've found that messing around with the chain while the timing cover is on takes about as long as pulling the cover.

Remove the access cover

Turn the crankshaft counter clockwise to compress the tensioner

Align the holes on the lock (A) and the auto-tensioner (B), then insert a 1.5 mm (0.06 inch) diameter pin (C) into the holes. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to secure the pin.
