Intermittent Loud (Valve Train Like)Tapping Engine Noise

Q.My 1987 Accord with a carburated 2.0 engine has a loud valve like tapping noise which comes and goes. I've used high quality fuel system cleaner several times thinking of possibly pre-ignition due to carbon deposits, but no results. The tapping noise will occur one day and not the next. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this problem?..
