Q.I recently took my 2000 TL in for a timing belt replacement and some A/C work. Dealer recommended EGR cleaning, top-engine clean, new spark plugs, etc. Day after I got the car back, check engine and TCS lights came on. Dealer reports misfires in cylinders 2&4.

They've had the car for about a week now. First they discovered that the plugs were gapped wrong, but the lights came back on after that was corrected. Now thay say that swapping out the fuel injectors with another car on the lot fixed the problem (thru test miles). They want >$900 for the fuel injector replacement.

Since I've never had these lights come on before I took the car in, I'm having trouble believing they didn't mess up the injectors when they did their other work. Their explanation is that now that the EGR is clean, more air/fuel can flow through and the old (clogged?) injectors are having a problem.

Should I pay for the $900 repair, get a lawyer to try to get them to fix for free, or try another option?

Answer The top engine clean can dislodge carbon deposits in the egr system, the valves and the tops of the pistons - but these components do not connect to the fuel injectors themselves, so that wouldnt clog the injectors.
Timing belt installation has no bearing on the injectors.
Their diagnosis is most likely correct and what they have done up to this point wouldnt have damaged or clogged the injectors.
$900 is a little on the high side, but you are paying for factory parts and dealer labor rates.
You could call around to local independent shops and maybe get it done for $200 or so less.
