High RPS while engine is cold

Q.i have a 89 acura legend coupe 2.7 ltr--at start-up when the motor is cold, immediately the rpm's go up to 2500 and stays there about 5 minutes. if i put the car in gear before the rpm's come down, i'm afraid i'll bust something!
Answer -Could you explain your situation a little more?
has the check engine light come on ?
has the cooling system been checked lately
