Codes PO730 and 740 - check engine light

Car: Acura, TL, 2003, 3.2     -    Back to Fix-It    -    Acura TL Repair Manuals

Q.I HAVE A 2003 ACURA 3.2 TL. THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ON WITH CODES OF PO730 & 740. IS IT MORE COMMON FOR THE SHIFT SOLENOIDS TO GO OR IS IT THE WHOLE TRANSMISSION. I DO HERE NOISE COMING FROM TRANSMISSION, IT SOUND LIKE THE PUMP. THE FLUID ALSO SMELLS A LITTLE BURNT.

Answer Unfortunately, you will need a new transmission. This is a very common failure in your vehicle, to the point that American Honda has extended the warranty to 93 months or 114,450 miles. What happens is the clutch material inside the trans fails and plug's up the solenoids causing the p0740 as well as p0730 in some cases. Since the torque converter clutch uses the most oil flow to apply this is usually the first code to show up. To repair, it means a rebuild on the transmission or replacement.
