Sporatic idling

Car: Acura, CL, 2001     -    Back to Fix-It    -    Acura Repair Manuals

Q.I have a 2001 CL S Acura with 121k it had a new timing belt and water pump put in at 111k. Car runs like new but Lately at idle the engine will rev up to 1800 to 2000 rpms and back down to 700 rpms continusually. Some days it does not do it all the time and other days it does. What is causing this?

Answer Make sure your vehicle is full of antifreeze. If so, your problem is most likely a dirty/faulty iac (idle air control) valve. It is located under your throttle body. I usually try to remove and clean them with some spray carburator cleaner. If that doesn't help, you may need to replace it. Also spray some of that cleaner around the intake area while idling to check for vacuum leaks. If the cleaner gets sucked in, the engine speed will raise.
