Trouble code P1740

Car: Acura, TL, 2002, 3.2     -    Back to Fix-It    -    Acura TL Repair Manuals

Q.I am looking for an answer from a Certified Acura or Honda Tech. I am looking at buying a 2002 3.2L TL. It has the P1740 trouble code which I've read is "4th pressure switch circuit malfuction." I've read that this is a $70 externally mounted part. Should this scare me as it may relate a bigger problem that the acuras were recalled for/warranty extended for? The trans runs and shifts normally, whether in auto or when it's shifted up through the gears manually. The car is outside the 7 year window for the extended warranty. Thanks.

Answer This switch is a pretty common failure on these transmissions. However if this car has the original trans or if this trans has dirty fluid it could be a sign it is on its way out and the car is ready to have a trans failure. So if it has the updated trans and the fluid is clean then it is a bad switch. But if the trans is original or the trans fluid is dirty it is clogged with debris and the trans is going out. We change the fluid first and strain it through a paint strainer to look for debris before changing the switch on these.
