Car: Volkswagen, Beetle, 1998, 1.9 diesel     -    Back to Fix-It    -    Volkswagen Repair Manuals

Q.hi, i have a 98 vw beetle and it won't start. it spins over correctly and getting voltage at the fuel shut off solenoid, and it is working correctly. loosen the injector line and fuel is coming out. replaced the glow plugs. the engine will not even try to start. the glow plug light comes on then goes off quickly. the car has had problems of staring after the engine had reached normal operating temp. need some light on this one. there is no dtc"s in the computer.

I already checked/done: checked timing, replaced glow plugs, fuel filter, inspected voltage and checked operation of fues shut off soleniod..

Answer Here is a list of a few things that can cause this:
Faulty glow plug, harness, or relay (disconnect temp sensor and use a test light to test the current flow thru the harness to the glow plugs)
Faulty temp sensor
Faulty Mass air flow sensor
Belt timing is out of time (critical)
injection pump timing is off
Stopped up intake manifold and egr valve
The belt timing and injection timing require specific knowledge and tools to check.
