my Air Conditioner is not working properly.

Q.my 1996 Ford Explorer Air Conditioner is not working properly. The compressor will not engage. I am talking about the part in front of the belt. It is circular and has a hex type bolt on it which is quite large. Could you please tell me what might be the problem and what I should expect to pay to repair it?

I already checked/done: We added freon 2 years ago and last year it was blowing hot air so we added freon and towards the end of the summer, it ran out and was again blowing hot air. This year we tested for leaks, added freon and the AC worked.
Three days later I get in and no AC. I take it to my friend who has been helping me and we realize that that part of the compressor is not engaged.
We fiddled with it and it would turn over and stop. He tested all of the fuses (under the hood and inside the door) and all were OK.
That is where I am at this time.
My friend suggested I check to see if there was any recall on the AC or support for the problem and how to resolve it. There we no recalls for my VIN. And then somehow I got your site.

Answer this may help you and your friend figure this out
---I have sent a pic of the wireing to the compressor
---I would unplug the low side cycling switch and jump its two wires with the car running, if the compressor comes on ,and you know it has a full charge of freon, then that switch is bad, if there is no freon in the system then the compressor is the first spot that leaks, is the clutch and pulley on the front of the compressor wet?
The low side cycling switch is mounted to the accumulator on the pass side of the engine compartment.
