Overheated once i've heard steam from the reservior on a couple of occasions

Car: Acura, TL, 2000     -    Back to Fix-It    -    Acura TL Repair Manuals

Q.I have a 2000 Acura TL, which over heated once (temp guage in red)but i've heard steam from the reservior on a couple of other occasion within the past month.
I've filled the radiator up with water at time of over heat and the guage seems to read normal. I mentioned this to sevice agent when I took it into for an intermediate service and they latter told me that I have a head gasket leak. Sounds like they tested to see if gases where present in the coolant. Anyway, do Block Sealers work (eg K & W)and can I use it in my TL. I have a 135,000 miles on the car, it's in great shape...except for this issue which will cost me $3000 fix.

Answer Depending on how bad the head gasket is blown, I have had some success with the sealers.
I normally use "Barrs Leak" at the customers request. However, there are some brands on the market that will work just as good. If you can isolate the cylinder that is causing the combustion gases to enter into the coolant. You will want to remove the spark plug from that cylinder after the engine has warmed up and let it sit with the sealer in it for about 3 hours or more. That will help the sealer to work into the bad part of the gasket.
Sometimes it is good also to put the plug back in and run the engine up to temp and do the procce.. >> login for more
