Steering wheel shaking on downhill braking

Q.Hello I have a new 09 Acura MDX and just had a oil service done and have close to 30,000 miles and the steering wheel was shaking on downhill braking so the dealer said I need to turn the rotors for 260 bucks and I said way to soon for this type of repair and yelled a little and they did it for free but now I am worried about the future of the wear and tear and life of the rotors Am I right or wrong? thanks Grant.

Answer A lot depends on how the vehicle is driven, over what type of terrain and the loads placed in the vehicle as to the life of the rotors. One downhill run that overheats the brakes can cause the rotors to warp and if you live in the mountains this can be a daily occurrence. If you pull a trailer this can be a factor as well.
Turning (machining) the rotors will shorten the wear life of the surface so they will not last as long but the rotors are much thinner today to cut as much weight as possible so it is likely that you would have had to replace them when the pads were worn out.
