While driving the car died

Car: Acura, CL, 1999, 3.0     -    Back to Fix-It    -    Acura Repair Manuals

Q.have a 99 acura CL. While driving the car died. It was just in the shop to have a coolant hose replaced (ten minutes before it died).
the deaership says they think it is the ignition. never had a problem starting it before. we were told that there was a loose connection in the ignition that caused the
engine to turn it self off. I' ve spoken to some mecanics and no one has ever heard of this problem. Help we could use an explanation. Thanks.

The dealership said the problem is in the ignition switch and since it is sealed they cannot say what is the exact problem.
We have requested the part for further inspection.
NO ONE I have spoken to has every experienced this problem with a CL. The service rep said as I stated before there is something loose in the ignition and it make the vehicle turn itself off. never once had any problem starting the car always kicked over first crank, everytime.

Answer It sounds like what the shop is describing is the ignition switch.
Honda and Acura had problems with their ignition switches in the late 1990's. The contacts in the ignition switch would overheat and cause the engine to stall. The cars were recalled to have the switch replaced, but the problem happened again in some cases. You may want to ask the dealer if the recall has been done. This is a safety recall so it does not expire.
