Q.Engine Mechanical problem
I just bought a low mileage (17715miles) Cobra with the supercharged 4V motor that had a Knock/tapping on the passenger side of engine betting I could fix it myself if I got a discount on the car.
Had it diagnosed at a Ford dealer who said the #1&4 rod bearings were the cause with accompanying low oil pressure and the engine overheating due to the electric cooling fan not working.
The car also had a rebuilt/salvage title due to a front end wreck but seemed repaired OK. My question is first how do I get to the rod bearings the easiest way?
Does the engine have to be removed or can I drop the K-member to remove the oil pan? How do I get a step by step procedure on either method?
Also, I'm not an expert but it sure sounds alot like a top end cam follower/tappet noise to me...how can I be sure? Also any tip on fixing the cooling fan on these cars (could be related to the front end wreck probably). Thanks for your answers.

Answer On that engine there are oil pressurized timing chain tensioners, they are know to have problems. When this occurs you will get a timing chain noise that sounds much like a knock.
If you look at the front of the engine you will see a large aluminum cover. If you remove this cover you may find a issue with the timing chain, guides or tensioners, they are located on both sides of the engine. If it is a rod there is a good chance that the crank is damaged. I have one if my shop right now with a spun bearing and the crank is bad also. If you support the engine from above I you could remove the k member to access the oil pan b.. >> login for more
