Ignition Coil Troubleshooting

1.Check the diagnostic trouble code (DTC), without ETCS,with ETCS.

Is DTC indicated?


YES - Perform the troubleshooting for the indicated DTC. n


NO - Go to 2.


Remove the spark plugs from the cylinder head, and inspect the spark plug

Is the spark plug OK?


YES - Go to 3.


NO - Replace the spark plug.n


3.Remove the PGM-FI main relay 2.

4.Start the engine and let it run until it stalls.

5.Install the spark plugs on the ignition coils.

6.Connect the ignition coil connector, and connect the spark plug on the ground.

7.With the shift lever in N or P (CVT), turn the ignition switch to start (III), and check the spark.

Does the plug spark?


YES - Ignition coil is OK. n


NO - Go to 7.

8.Substitute a known-good ignition coil, and recheck the spark.

Does the plug spark?


YES - Replace the original ignition coil. Perform the ETCS learn procedure (with ETCS).n


NO - If the front spark plug does not spark, Check for a blown No. 7 (15A) fuse in the under-dash fuse relay box. If the fuse is OK, repair open in the wire between the under-dash fuse relay box and front ignition coil. If the rear spark plug does not spark, Check for a blown No. 9 (15A) fuse in the under-dash fuse relay box. If the fuse is OK, repair open in the wire between the under-dash fuse relay box and rear ignition coil. Perform the ETCS learn procedure (with ETCS).n
